Lesson 1: Developing and Organizing the Presentation
Overview Irrespective of the field of work, one of the most important skills that all managers need to possess is good communication skills. Making informal and formal presentations of various types is an important communication skill that a manager should master. The content, quality and delivery all determine the effectiveness of a presentation, and can have an impact on how you are viewed as a manager. Your reputation and success usually depend on how well you can present information and ideas to others. Oral presentations can often accomplish much more than written communication alone because it involves body language and allows you to add a more personal touch. For example, it is very difficult to convey enthusiasm or confidence in writing. Before making a presentation, it is usually a good idea to consider the targeted audience and carefully plan and organize what you wish to communicate to them.
Lesson Objectives Upon successful completion of this lesson, you will be able to: · Develop an effective strategy for a specific presentation based on a complete analysis of the situation · Identify general and specific goals for a given situation · Construct a clear thesis based on an analysis of a specific speaking situation · Choose and develop an organizational plan for the body of a presentation that best suits its goal and the audience · Create an effective introduction and conclusion for a presentation · Design a presentation that contains effective transitions between the introduction and body, between points in the body, and between the body and conclusion
Online Discussion 1 · Use any form of free communication technology, such as Skype or Windows Live, to introduce yourself and work with a peer to come up with as many common types of presentational speaking that a manager may be required to do. · Then, on the online class discussion board, introduce yourself briefly to the rest of the class and share some of your personal experience with making presentations · Make a contribution to a class list of common types of presentational speaking. Once everyone has had a chance to contribute to the list, feel free to add to it. · Please feel free to ask questions or make comments to encourage the formation of a community of learners.
Note: At the end of the unit, all of your online discussions, worth 10% of your final grade, will be assessed using a rubric. Make sure you take a look at the online discussion criteria outlined in the rubric early.
