In addition to creating a well-organized presentation, you need supporting materials so that your audience pays attention to you, comprehends the claims you’re making, and accepts your message. Aids can be both verbal, such as stories and examples, and visual, such as images, videos and graphs.
Lesson Objectives Upon successful completion of this lesson, you will be able to: · Develop and use each type of verbal aid as appropriate to add interest, clarity, and/or proof to a main point · Design a visual aid appropriate for a given situation · Choose the most appropriate and effective medium for presenting visual aids in a specific context · Design and critique a presentation using PowerPoint or similar software
Online Discussion 2 · Use any form of free communication technology, such as Windows Live, Dim Dim or Skype to work with a peer to complete the critical analysis questions on the case study “Mosquitoes create a buzz over Bill Gates’ Speech” on page 358 of your text. · Make a comment on the discussion board about the ethical dilemma mentioned in the case and respond to comments that peers have made.
Activity 2.1 · Read Chapter 11 of your Adler and Elmhorst text, “Verbal and Visual Support in Presentations,” and make notes in your private notebook about the following topics: o Functions of Supporting Materials o Verbal Support o Visual Aids · Pay special attention to the section entitled “Avoiding Computer Catastrophes in Presentations” on page 370 of your text. · Go to the self quizzes at the Online Learning Center at www.mhhe.com/adler10e to test your knowledge of the Chapter 11 concepts. · Complete the skill builder exercises at the end of Chapter 11.
